Associated American Artists

The Associated American Artists Galleries Records comprises articles, clippings, exhibition catalogs, photographs and promotional material pertaining to the general history of the organization, the individual artists it represented, and promotions for various clients. Originally housed in 27 scrapbooks, the documents have been removed and placed in folders for archival preservation.

Chen, Chi, 1912-

Papers of the Chinese-American painter, chiefly of watercolors. Collection includes artwork reproductions for periodicals, a poster, greeting cards, and an Irving Trust Company portfolio; typescript speeches and poems; articles and reviews (1951-1960), and exhibition catalogs and invitations (1948-1971).

Clark, Eliot Candee, 1883-

Papers of the American painter, art critic. Correspondence, 1910-1969; holograph and typescript essays, lectures, and speeches; photographs; and printed material, including articles, exhibition catalogs, and material relating to the National Academy of Design, of which Clark wrote a history.

Coiner, Charles T.

Correspondence (1930s-1970); design drawings for government commissions, including preliminary sketches and other material pertaining to the NRA blue eagle as well as civilian defense logos and war posters; documents relating to various Ayer clients, including the Container Corporation of America; ms. essays and speeches, and tear sheets for Coiner's 'Clipping Board' column; and memorabilia, including awards, clippings, exhibition catalogs, and photographs. Correspondence includes letters of Raymond A. Ballinger, Herbert Bayer, Harry Bouras, Alexey Brodovitch, Werner Drewes, Leo Lionni, George Samerjan, Lajos Szalay, and others.

Cook, Howard Norton, 1901-1980

Correspondence (1928-1972); artwork (original watercolors and reproductions); writings by Cook (articles, essays, reminiscences about the Taos community, statements and notes on Cook's artistic philosophy); and memorabilia, including financial and legal documents, and printed material (articles, reviews, clippings about Cook, exhibition announcements, invitations, and catalogs). Correspondents include artists Ernest L. Blumenschein, Victor Candell, Jean Charlot, Fred Conway, Russell Cowles, Andrew Dasburg, Lamar Dodd, Ernest Fiene, Lez Haas, John Haley, Ward Lockwood, Henry Lee McFee, B.J.O. Nordfeldt, Arthur Osver, Rudolph Ruzicka, Millard Sheets, and Carl Zigrosser. Other correspondents include Margaret Anderson, Joseph Blumenthal, John Hodgdon Bradley, J. Frank Dobie, and Lenore Marshall. Extensive correspondence relating to Cook's mural work includes that of the Mayo Clinic, the U. S. Post Office, the U.S. Public Buildings Administration, and the U.S. Treasury Department.

Cunningham, Ben, 1904-1975

Spanning 1904 to 1969, the Ben Cunningham Papers comprises biographical material, correspondence, artwork, writings, and memorabilia of the American painter and art educator (1904-1975). The collection, which is heavily annotated by Cunningham, illuminates a professional career which encompassed WPA Federal Art Project mural work as well as the op art movement of the mid to late 1960s. Some of the items in the collection have been restricted to prevent their further deterioration. Photocopies of these embrittled items have been made available for researcher use.
